    The Scent

    Everything is warm before you enter. Cloves and pink pepper open it warm and slightly medicinal, orange blossom softening the edges. Then chestnut and guaiac wood take the middle — the smell of a fire that has just died down. Vanilla, Peru balsam and cashmeran hold the base sweet and hushed. A domestic scent, but never small. Warmth remembered rather than performed.
